People with red hair and green eyes are often categorized as the Autumn type, but this type encompasses much more variety. Autumn types might have brown, red, or camel-coloured hair, with eyes that are green, brown, or even ochre-yellow. Their hair may feature a golden glow, though it can just as easily be a matte shade. An important distinction among the different autumn types is between individuals with a noticeably yellow skin tone and those with a more pink complexion, also referred to as undertone. The latter often have freckles and can have quite dark hair, which is why we like to call this the Dark Autumn type.

The Autumn Type is rare
Autumn types are the least common colour type worldwide in terms of percentage. In Scotland, however, there are many autumn types; think of men with a reddish beard and green or brown eyes.
During a colour analysis, you’ll discover which colours suit you best and what your top colours are. For some, bright colours look better, while others suit softer combinations like moss green, stone red, and rose. Gold is also a lovely “colour” to incorporate into your wardrobe. Think of a party dress or fabric with subtly woven golden threads. Gold can also be incorporated into makeup, adding a chic and festive touch.
Traditional Autumn Type
If you’re a traditional autumn type with a clear yellow undertone, it’s important not to stick exclusively to beiges and browns. This can create too much uniformity, making the look appear dull. Add a bold or dark colour, or experiment with different textures, like shiny and matte fabrics, or incorporate a pattern. On the other hand, combinations of only dark colours can look too dark and dull —think of an outfit with brown, burgundy, and hunter green. This rarely flatters. The look often appears fresher and more cheerful if you add a light or vibrant colour.
For accurate colour advice, it’s essential to analyse with an extensive collection of colour drapes. This involves sitting in front of a mirror (ideally in good daylight) and comparing colours one by one. What stands out? Which colours make imperfections like under-eye shadows, blemishes, and fine lines less noticeable? In which colours do you appear more radiant, with your beautiful brown eyes, bright smile, or lovely hair more enhanced? And also: in which colours does your face appear fuller or slimmer? This is the power of colour! After all these years—I have been working with colour for 30 years—I still find it magical. Colour can do so much for you, or, conversely, work against you if you choose the “wrong” colours.
Colours for the Autumn Type
The most important base colours for the autumn type are brown and green, which look stunning. The autumn type also has many more colours available, including vibrant shades like tomato red, (dark) turquoise, deep orange, and yellow. Softer colours, such as cream white, rose, and bronze are also beautiful. Petrol blue and burgundy are excellent colours to spice up an outfit.

Colour Analysis Academy works with 16 different colour types. The core types—spring, summer, winter, and autumn—form the foundation, with many additional variations, transitional types, and nuances. This ensures a personalised and up-to-date colour consultation every time.
Each colour type is unique, which makes giving and receiving a colour analysis so fascinating. Besides the autumn type, I also identify a Dark Autumn type, two Dark types that may include a mix of winter and autumn colours, and a Winter-Autumn type, where vibrant autumn colours complement the winter palette. A colour analysis should never be a one-size-fits-all approach; it’s all about the nuances, and it’s essential that you can see the differences for yourself. We use over 100 colour drapes—both shiny and matte—and, if you like, we can take photos of your best colours as well as your less flattering shades. This way, after your consultation, you can clearly see which colours suit you best and in which combination.

The Autumn Type also suits vibrant colours like terra, tomato red, and turquoise.
After a colour analysis, you’ll receive a practical colour card with your most flattering colours. This card is a handy tool when shopping for clothing, accessories, shoes, and makeup, and it easily fits into your bag or phone case.
